The Horticulture and Home Pest News website serves as a hub of expert information about gardening, landscaping, lawn care, home pest management, and much more. HortNews is built with the Luggage Drupal platform with the Suitcase theme from Biology IT.


Field Ecology Research and Teaching Course
Under mentor supervision, teams of undergraduate students design and complete ecological research projects in a field setting. Each team also creates a teaching activity based on their research project. Teams engage community members and K-12 students in their teaching activity during a field day, and through visits to schools and other institutions. ISU students gain experience in written, visual, and oral communication by developing research and teaching activity proposals, research reports and outreach materials, and by delivering a presentation of project results.

Forecast and Assessment of Cropping sysTemS (FACTS)
During the growing season we provide real-time measurements and forecasts for weather, soil water and nitrogen, crop water and nitrogen, yield predictions, crop stage and heat/frost stress. Before/after the growing season we benchmark production, economic, and environmental performance, estimate the yield gaps, and perform what-if scenario analysis to identify management practices with the highest profits and lowest environmental impacts.
Genome Informatics Facility (GIF)
The Genome Informatics Facility serves as a centralized resource of expertise on the application of emerging sequencing technologies and open source software as applied to biological systems. Its mission is to integrate this knowledge into pipelines that are easy to understand and use by faculty, staff and students to enable the transformation of ‘big data’ into data that dramatically accelerates our understanding of biology and evolutionary processes.

Integrated Crop Management

Iowa Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program
The Iowa Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP) is a joint effort of the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) and the USDA Farm Service Agency in cooperation with local Soil and Water Conservation Districts that provides incentives to landowners to voluntarily restore wetlands targeted for water quality improvement in the heavily tile-drained regions of Iowa.
Iowa Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit
The Cooperative Research Units (CRU) Program provides federal agencies the opportunity to access fish and wildlife expertise available at 40 Cooperative Fish & Wildlife Research Units (Units) and cooperating faculty at host universities. Federal agencies issue intra and inter agency agreements to US Geological Survey (USGS) for specific projects and informational needs. The CRU Headquarters office and USGS Contracting then issue a Research Work Order to a Unit and its host university, to conduct the work specified for the agreed upon funding.

In the lab we examine the molecular interactions between viruses and insects, and between microbe-derived insect toxins and their receptors. To date my research in my lab has focused on freshwater mollusks, fishes, and shrimps. I have two major areas of interest, I use phylogenetic methods to understand the evolution of organisms and their distributions, and population genetic tools to aid in conservation of rare species. Because many freshwater organisms are affected by anthropogenic impacts on water quality and availability, much of the work in my lab has involved endangered species.

A fundamental feature of life is the interaction between its component parts, without which life would not exist. Interaction occurs at all levels. At the molecular level, proteins and nucleic acids form complexes that create the structural and functional entity, which is the cell. Cells interact to form multicellular organisms (eukaryotes) or communities (prokaryotes). At both the molecular and cellular levels, interaction involves communication in addition to association. It is by way of these communications that most of the miracles of nature are achieved.

Research in my group is centered on studies of diterpenoids. These form a large group of natural products, with over 12,000 already known. Notably, many (although certainly not all) of these diterpenoids are found in plants, where the requisite biosynthetic machinery for gibberellin phytohormones, particularly the relevant diterpene cyclases, provides a biosynthetic reservoir that appears to have been repeatedly drawn upon to evolve new such natural products, which we have termed labdane-related diterpenoids.

Laboratory of W. Allen Miller
We employ plant viruses as easy-to-use model systems to provide basic understanding of how viruses express genes and replicate. Because of similarities in translation and replication strategies across kingdoms, this knowledge may be relevant to major human viruses such as hepatitis A and C viruses, dengue, West Nile, and others. At a more fundamental level, viruses are fascinating as the smallest, minimal replicating entities. They allow detailed understanding of what it takes to replicate, the essential property that defines life.

LAS IT provides a wide array of IT services for all of the departments, programs, and researchers within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Leandro Lab
The Leandro lab conducts research on fungal diseases of soybean. Our focus is on diseases caused by soilborne fungal pathogens, particularly on soybean sudden death syndrome and soybean root rot. We also conduct research on foliar diseases of soybean, including soybean rust.

Luggage is a platform for creating websites, targeted at academic websites for departments and researchers. The platform is built on Drupal and consists of features that come with configuration. For example, the People feature contains a prebuilt content type appropriate for displaying a group of people divided into subgroups of your own choosing (faculty, staff, etc.) along with a view.
Maize Surface Lipids
This collaborative and interdisciplinary project is focused on understanding the biosynthetic pathways and genetic networks responsible for the accumulation of surface lipids on aerial portions of land plants. These surface lipids provide a hydrophobic layer that is a primary line of defense against numerous biological and environmental stresses.
Master Gardener Program
Master Gardeners are individuals who have taken the Master Gardener training and share their time and expertise as volunteers in community gardens, city beautification projects, and farmers markets to name a few. It is the acquisition of knowledge, the skill in gardening, and giving back to the community that distinguishes a Master Gardener from other gardeners.

NovoMag
This collaborative research project implements new, transformative strategies for the design of novel magnetic materials, with special focus on sustainable materials containing earth-abundant and inexpensive elements. The project couples a strong experimental effort with recent theoretical advances in quantum modeling algorithms and software, data-mining techniques, and high-performance hardware to accomplish its objectives.
Nuñez Laboratory
As human populations continue to grow, the management of wildlife species is becoming increasingly necessary. As stewards of wild populations, we have a responsibility to manage them with the most effective and ethical means possible. My research suggests that if we are to achieve this goal, we must better understand the potential individual- and population-level side-effects of our management practices.
