Course Creation

How to pull everything together into creating a course

We're nearing the end of our course tutorial series. In this tutorial, we will bring together all of the pages that we've created so far into one course listing. If you were confused by the significance of all the components that we covered so far, this tutorial should address your questions.

Step 1: Adding the components of a course creation page

First, let's take a look at all of the components of the course creation page:

Google Scholar Publications

How to add Google Scholar Publications to the Biblio module

In this tutorial, you will learn how to import your Google Scholar publications to a Luggage website. Please note that this tutorial only applies to older Luggage websites that have the Publications feature enabled. New websites use the Iowa State Digital Repository for publications.

Delete content

How to delete content from a website

In this tutorial we will walk through two ways in which you may delete content. For example, if you add a page to your website, the steps below will show you how to delete the entire page.

Logging Into Your Website

Log into your website by adding "login" to the end of the URL.

For example, if your website is at http://example.edu you would log in at http://example.edu/login

You will use the familiar single-signon screen provided by Iowa State University central ITS to enter your ISU netid and password, then you will return to your website and will be logged in.

You can check if you are logged in by the presence of a black bar at the top of the screen with menu items like "Content".

If you have trouble logging into your website, please contact websupport@iastate.edu.

Tables

The next button in the top bar is the table creation button. This button allows you to create tables to organize data so that it is more readable for users. Here is where the table button is located:

Editing Content and Viewing Revisions

How to edit website content and view your revisions

In this tutorial, we will cover how to edit content. Sometimes, you will notice that your content has information that needs to be updated. Or perhaps you created an Announcement with a typo in the body text. Also, at the end of this tutorial, we will discuss how you can view revisions (if they are enabled on your Luggage site).

This tutorial uses the pages content type as an example, but each content type will have similar instructions.

Announcements

How to create an announcement for your website

In this tutorial, you will learn all about the announcement content type. The announcement content type is used to present information about events or department news for site visitors (e.g. highlighting a department's accomplishments by showing off new research or displaying faculty awards). Because of the announcement's banner function on the front page, an announcement is often the first thing a site visitor will see. Keep that in mind when creating content.

Clearing your Browser Cache

How to quickly clear your browser cache

Sometimes after updating a site you may be asked to clear your browser's cache or temporary files in order to see changes or to help diagnose an issue. This cache stores web pages, images, and other resources so that the next time you visit a page, instead of downloading it all again, it will just use what was previously downloaded. Sometimes these cached files can get out of date after a site is updated. In order to force the browser to download the new files from the server we need to clear its cache.

Content Cards

Content Cards are a compact, attractive way to present an image, link, and/or label. Once they've been set up, they're easy to edit.

Courses

The Courses feature offers an easy and attractive way to simply display the courses that you will be offering during a given school year. The format makes it easy for users to interact with your courses list. Courses is a feature that is not turned on by default in our Luggage platform. If you would like this feature added to your site, please email websupport@iastate.edu and we'd be happy to add it!
